Plastics are typically organic polymers of high molecular mass, but they often contain other substances. They are usually synthetic, most commonly derived from petrochemicals, but many are partially natural.

Laboratory tests and field studies show that recycled plastic modifiers have better resistance to moisture damage, therefore an improved riding quality results, creating a reduction in vehicle emissions released into the atmosphere as well as reduced vehicle operation costs (VOC) . In addition, the process of constructing the recycled plastic roads prevents more then 300 tons of greenhouse gases per year and decreases the amount of toxic fumes released into the atmosphere when attaching the asphalt. Using PEHD plastic/rubber the amount of asphalt bitumen is reduced by an average of 5%. Therefore approximately 850 liters of bitumen per km will not be produced. This is an economic advantage.
